Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 37 / 50
1And Ya’akov dwelt in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Kena’an. 2And these are the generations of Ya’akov. And Yosef was seventeen years old, feeding the sheep of his father with his brothers, being young; with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, the wives of his father; and Yosef brought to Yisra’el their father their evil reproach. 3And Ya’akov loved Yosef more than all his sons, because he was to him the son of old age; and he made for him a ketonet passim [coat of many colors/long tunic] of many colors. 4And his brothers, having seen that his father loved him more than all his sons, hated him, and could not speak shalom [peaceably] to him. 5And Yosef dreamt a dream, and reported it to his brothers. 6And he said to them, “Hear this dream which I have dreamt. 7Behold, we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field, and my sheaf arose and stood upright, and your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us, or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” And they hated him still more for his dreams and for his words. 9And he dreamt another dream, and related it to his father and to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamt another dream: behold, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” 10And his father rebuked him, and said, “What is this dream which you have dreamt? Shall I, your mother, and your brothers indeed come to bow down to you to the earth?” 11And his brothers committed qinah [envied/were jealous of] him; but his father kept the saying in mind. 12And his brothers went to feed the sheep of their father at Shechem. 13And Yisra’el said to Yosef, “Do not your brothers feed the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” And he said, “Hineni [Here I am].” 14And Yisra’el said to him, “Go, see if your brothers and the sheep are well, and bring me word.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15And a man found him wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, “What do you seek?” 16And he said, “I seek my brothers; tell me, please, where they feed their flocks.” 17And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” And Yosef went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan. 18And they saw him from afar before he came near to them, and they conspired against him to kill him. 19And they said one to another, “Behold, this dreamer comes. 20Come now, let us kill him, and cast him into one of the borot [pits]; and we will say, ‘An evil wild beast has devoured him’; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.” 21And Reuven, having heard it, rescued him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.” 22And Reuven said to them, “Shed no blood; cast him into this pit in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him” — that he might deliver him out of their hands, to restore him to his father. 23And it came to pass, when Yosef came to his brothers, that they stripped Yosef of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him. 24And they took him and cast him into the borot [pit}; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25And they sat down to eat bread; and lifting up their eyes they saw, behold, Yishma’elite travelers came from Gil’ad, with their camels bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, going to carry them down to Mitzrayim [Egypt]. 26And Yehudah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27Come, let us sell him to the Yishma’elites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers agreed. 28Then Midianite mercha committednts passed by; and they drew Yosef up, lifted him out of the pit, and sold Yosef to the Yishma’elites for twenty pieces of gold; and they brought Yosef into Mitzrayim. 29And Reuven returned to the pit, and saw Yosef was not in the pit; and he tore his garments. 30And he returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is not; and I, where shall I go?” 31And they took Yosef’s coat, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood. 32And they sent the coat of many colors, and brought it to their father, and said, “This we have found; know now whether it is your son’s coat or not.” 33And he recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s coat; an evil wild beast has devoured him; Yosef is surely torn in pieces.” 34And Ya’akov tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many yamim rabbim [many days]. 35And all his sons and daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and said, “I will go down to my son mourning to She’ol.” And his father wept for him. 36And the Midianites sold Yosef in Mitzrayim to Potiphar, an eunuch [officer] of Pharaoh, captain of the guard
