Sarai, Avram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a Mitzrit [Egyptian] maidservant whose name was Hagar.
Sarai said to Avram: “Behold, Yahuah has restrained me from bearing. Go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children through her.” Avram listened to Sarai’s voice.
So Sarai, Avram’s wife, took Hagar the Mitzrit, her maid, after Avram had dwelt ten years in the land of Kena’an, and gave her to her husband Avram as a wife.
He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
Sarai said to Avram: “My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Yahuah judge between me and you.”
Avram said to Sarai: “Behold, your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” Sarai anah [afflicted/humbled] her, and she fled from her presence.
The malakh Yahuah [angel of Yahuah] found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.
He said: “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said: “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.”
The malakh Yahuah said to her: “Return to your mistress and submit yourself under her hand.”
The malakh Yahuah said: “I will greatly multiply your zera [seed/descendants], so that it shall not be numbered for multitude.”
The malakh Yahuah said: “Behold, you are with child, And shall bear a son, And you shall call his name Yishma’el [El Shama / God Has Heard], Because Yahuah has heard your affliction.
He shall be a wild man; His hand against every man, And every man’s hand against him; He shall dwell in the presence of all his brothers.”
She called the Name of Yahuah who spoke to her: “You are El-Ro’i [The Mighty One who sees me].” For she said: “Have I also seen Him who sees me?”
Therefore the well was called Be’er-Lachai-Ro’i [Well of the Living One who sees me]; it is between Kadesh and Bered.
Hagar bore Avram a son, and Avram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore, Yishma’el.
Avram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Yishma’el to him.
