Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 12 / 50
1Yahuah said to Avram [Abram]: “Lech Lecha [Go forth] from your land, from your kindred, and from your father’s house, to the land that I will show you. 2I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you, I will magnify your name, and you shall be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you. In you all the families of the Aretz shall be blessed.” 4So Avram went, as Yahuah had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. Avram was 75 years old when he departed from Charan [Haran]. 5Avram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions they had gathered, and the people they had acquired in Charan. They set out for the land of Kena’an [Canaan], and they came into the land of Kena’an. 6Avram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Kena’anim were in the land. 7Yahuah appeared to Avram and said: “To your zera [seed/descendants] I will give this land.” So Avram built a mizbeach [altar] there to Yahuah who had appeared to him. 8From there he moved to the mountain east of Beit-El [Bethel], and pitched his ohel [tent], with Beit-El on the west and Ai on the east. There he built another mizbeach to Yahuah and called on the Name of Yahuah. 9Then Avram journeyed on, continuing toward the Negev. 10There was a famine in the land, so Avram went down to Mitzrayim [Egypt] to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11As he was about to enter Mitzrayim, Avram said to Sarai his wife: “I know that you are a woman of beautiful appearance. 12When the Mitzrim [Egyptians] see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but let you live. 13Say, I am his sister, so that it may go well with me because of you, and my life will be spared on your account.” 14When Avram entered Mitzrayim, the Mitzrim saw that Sarai was very beautiful. 15The princes of Pharaoh saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16Because of her, Pharaoh treated Avram well, giving him sheep, oxen, donkeys, male and female servants, and camels. 17But Yahuah afflicted Pharaoh and his house with nega’im [plagues/strokes] because of Sarai, Avram’s wife. 18Pharaoh called Avram and said: “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me she was your wife? 19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now, here is your wife; take her and go.” 20Pharaoh gave orders to his men concerning Avram, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.
