Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 28 / 50
1Yitzchak called Ya’akov, blessed him, and charged him: “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Kena’an. 2Arise, go to Paddan-Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father, and take a wife from there of the daughters of Lavan, your mother’s brother. 3And may my El Shaddai [The Almighty/All-Sufficient God], bless you, and increase you, and multiply you, and you shall become gatherings of nations. 4May He give you the blessing of Avraham, to you and to your seed after you, that you may inherit the land of your sojournings, which Elohim gave to Avraham.” 5So Yitzchak sent Ya’akov away, and he went to Paddan-Aram, to Lavan son of Bethuel the Aramean, brother of Rivkah, mother of Ya’akov and Esav. 6Esav saw that Yitzchak had blessed Ya’akov and sent him away to Paddan-Aram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he charged him, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Kena’an,” 7And that Ya’akov obeyed his father and mother and went to Paddan-Aram. 8So Esav saw that the daughters of Kena’an did not please Yitzchak his father. 9Esav went to Yishma’el and took Machalat, daughter of Yishma’el son of Avraham, sister of Nevayot, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had. 10Ya’akov went out from Be’er-Sheva and went toward Haran. 11He came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, put it under his head, and lay down in that place. 12He dreamed, and behold, a ladder set up on the earth, with its top reaching to the shamayim; and the malakhim of Elohim were ascending and descending on it. 13Behold, Yahuah stood above it and said: “I am Yahuah, Elohim of Avraham your father and Elohim of Yitzchak. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your seed. 14Your seed shall be as the dust of the earth. You shall spread abroad to the west, to the east, to the north, and to the south. In you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” 16Ya’akov awoke from his sleep and said: “Surely Yahuah is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17He was afraid and said: “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the Beit Elohim [House of God], and this is the gate of shamayim.” 18Ya’akov rose early in the morning, took the stone he had put under his head, set it up as a matzevah [stone pillar/monument], and poured oil on top of it. 19He called the name of that place Beit-El [House of God]; but the name of the city was Luz at first. 20Ya’akov vowed a vow, saying: “If Elohim will be with me, and keep me in this way that I go, and give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21So that I come again to my father’s house in shalom [peace/wholeness], then Yahuah shall be my Elohim. 22This stone which I have set up as a pillar shall be Elohim’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
