And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Ya’akov, went forth to observe the daughters of the inhabitants.
And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the land, saw her, took her, lay with her, and humbled her.
And his soul was attached to Dinah the daughter of Ya’akov, and he loved the young woman, and spoke kindly to her.
And Shechem spoke to Hamor his father, saying, “Take for me this young woman as a wife.”
And Ya’akov heard that the son of Hamor had defiled Dinah his daughter (now his sons were with his cattle in the field). And Ya’akov was silent until they came.
And Hamor the father of Shechem went forth to Ya’akov to speak with him.
And the sons of Ya’akov came from the field; and when they heard, the men were deeply grieved, and it was very grievous to them, because the man had wrought nevalah [disgraceful folly] in Yisra’el, having lain with the daughter of Ya’akov — which ought not to be done.
And Hamor spoke to them, saying, “Shechem my son longs for your daughter; give her therefore to him for a wife.
And intermarry with us. Give us your daughters, and take our daughters for your sons.
And dwell among us; behold, the land is spacious before you. Dwell in it, trade in it, and acquire possessions in it.”
And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor before you, and we will give whatever you shall ask.
Multiply the dowry and gift exceedingly, and I will give according to what you say; only give me the young woman as a wife.”
And the sons of Ya’akov answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
And Shimon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has an orlah [foreskin/is uncircumcised], for that is a reproach to us.
Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised.
Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and depart.”
And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem the son of Hamor.
And the young man did not delay to do this thing, because he delighted in Ya’akov’s daughter; and he was the most honored of all in his father’s house.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
“These men are peaceable with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it. Behold, the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.
Will not their cattle, their property, and all their beasts be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”
And all who went out of the gate of the city listened to Hamor and Shechem his son, and every male was circumcised.
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that the two sons of Ya’akov, Shimon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his cherev [sword], came upon the city unawares, and slew every male.
And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went forth.
The sons of Ya’akov came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Their sheep, oxen, donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field they took.
And all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives they took captive, and plundered whatever was in the houses.
And Ya’akov said to Shimon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me, making me odious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Kena’anites and the Perizzites; and I am few in number. They will gather against me and attack me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my household.”
And they said, “Should he treat our sister as a zonah [harlot]?”
