Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 21 / 50
1Yahuah visited Sarah as He had said, and Yahuah did for Sarah as He had spoken. 2Sarah conceived and bore Avraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which Elohim had spoken to him. 3Avraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Yitzchak [Isaac]. 4Avraham circumcised Yitzchak when he was eight days old, as Elohim commanded him. 5Avraham was 100 years old when Yitzchak his son was born. 6Sarah said: “Elohim has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” 7She said: “Who would have said to Avraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” 8The child grew and was weaned, and Avraham made a great mishteh [feast/banquet] on the day Yitzchak was weaned. 9Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Mitzrit [Egyptian], whom she had borne to Avraham, mocking Yitzchak. 10She said to Avraham: “Cast out this bondwoman and her son, for the son of this bondwoman shall not inherit with my son Yitzchak.” 11The matter was very grievous in Avraham’s sight because of his son. 12Elohim said to Avraham: “Do not let it be grievous in your sight because of the lad and because of your bondwoman. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice, for in Yitzchak shall your zera [seed/descendants] be called. 13Yet I will also make the son of the bondwoman into a nation, because he is your zera.” 14Avraham rose early in the morning, took lechem [bread] and a skin of water, gave them to Hagar, put the child on her shoulder, and sent her away. She departed and wandered in the wilderness of Be’er-Sheva. 15When the water in the skin was gone, she placed the child under one of the shrubs. 16She went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said: “Let me not see the death of the child.” She sat opposite him, and the child lifted up his voice and wept. 17Elohim heard the voice of the lad. The malakh Elohim [angel of God] called to Hagar out of heaven and said: “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for Elohim has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.” 19Elohim opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, filled the skin with water, and gave the lad drink. 20Elohim was with the lad, and he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer. 21He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took him a wife from Mitzrayim. 22At that time Avimelekh and Phichol the commander of his army spoke to Avraham, saying: “Elohim is with you in all that you do. 23Now therefore swear to me by Elohim that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my offspring, nor with my posterity. According to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me and to the land in which you have sojourned.” 24Avraham said: “I will swear.” 25Avraham reproved Avimelekh because of a well of water which Avimelekh’s servants had seized. 26Avimelekh said: “I do not know who has done this thing. You did not tell me, nor had I heard of it until today.” 27Avraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Avimelekh, and the two cut a berit [covenant]. 28Avraham set seven ewe lambs apart. 29Avimelekh said: “What are these seven ewe lambs which you have set apart?” 30Avraham said: “You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that they may be a witness that I dug this well.” 31Therefore he called that place Be’er-Sheva [Well of the Oath], because there they both swore. 32They cut a berit [covenant] at Be’er-Sheva. Avimelekh and Phichol the commander of his army returned to the land of the Philistines. 33Avraham planted a tamarisk tree at Be’er-Sheva, and there he called on the Name of Yahuah, El-Olam [Everlasting God]. 34Avraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.
