Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 3 / 50
1Now the nachash [serpent] was more cunning than any beast of the field which Yahuah Elohim had made. He said to the ishah [woman]: “Did Elohim really say, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the gan [garden]'?” 2The ishah said to the nachash: “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the gan, 3But of the fruit of the Etz HaDa’at Tov v’Ra [Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil] in the midst of the gan, Elohim said: 'You shall not eat of it, nor touch it, lest you die.'” 4The nachash said to the ishah: “You shall not surely die. 5For Elohim knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like Elohim, knowing tov [good] and ra [evil].” 6The ishah saw that the tree was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and desirable to make one wise. She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave to her ish [husband] with her, and he ate. 7Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8They heard the voice of Yahuah Elohim walking in the gan in the ruach [wind/breeze] of the day. Adam and his ishah hid themselves among the trees of the gan from the presence of Yahuah Elohim. 9Yahuah Elohim called to Adam: “Where are you?” 10He said: “I heard Your voice in the gan, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.” 11Yahuah Elohim said: “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree I commanded you not to eat?” 12Adam said: “The ishah You gave to be with me — she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” 13Yahuah Elohim said to the ishah: “What is this you have done?” The ishah said: “The nachash deceived me, and I ate.” 14Yahuah Elohim said to the nachash: “Because you have done this, You are cursed above all livestock and beasts of the field. On your belly you shall go, And dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15I will put eyvah [enmity] between you and the ishah, between your zera [seed/descendants] and her zera [seed/descendants]; He shall crush your head, And you shall strike his heel.” 16To the ishah He said: “I will greatly multiply your pain and travail; In sorrow you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your ish, And he shall rule over you.” 17To Adam He said: “Because you listened to your ishah and ate from the tree I commanded you not to eat, Cursed is the adamah [ground] because of you. In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. 18Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the plants of the field. 19By the sweat of your face you shall eat lechem [bread], Until you return to the adamah, For from it you were taken; Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” 20Adam called his ishah's name Chavah [Eve, Life], because she was the mother of all living. 21Yahuah Elohim made begadim [garments]. of skin for Adam and his ishah, and clothed them. 22Yahuah Elohim said: “Behold, Adam has become like one away from Us, knowing tov (good) and ra (evil). Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the Etz Chayim [Tree of Life] and eat, and live forever.” 23So Yahuah Elohim sent him out from the Gan Eden to l'avad [to work/serve] the adamah [ground] from which he was taken. 24He drove out Adam, and He placed keruvim [cherubim] and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the Etz Chayim.
