The life of Sarah was 127 years.
Sarah died in Kiryat-Arba (that is Chevron [Hebron]) in the land of Kena’an. Avraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
Avraham rose up from before his dead and spoke to the sons of Chet [Heth], saying:
“I am a sojourner and a stranger among you. Give me a possession of a qever [grave/burial place] among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
The sons of Chet answered Avraham:
“Hear us, Adoni [my lord]. You are a Nasi Elohim [prince/elevated leader of God] among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will withhold his tomb from you, that you may bury your dead.”
Avraham rose and bowed before the people of the land, the sons of Chet.
He spoke with them: “If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron son of Tzochar,
That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns, at the end of his field. Let him give it to me for the full price as a possession for a burial place among you.”
Ephron the Hittite was sitting among the sons of Chet. Ephron answered Avraham in the hearing of all who entered the gate of his city:
“No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field and the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.”
Avraham bowed before the people of the land.
He spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people: “If you will, hear me. I will give you the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there.”
Ephron answered Avraham:
“My lord, listen to me. The land is worth 400 shekels of silver, but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead.”
Avraham listened to Ephron, and weighed out to him the kesef [silver/money] which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Chet — 400 shekels of silver, according to the merchants’ standard.
So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within its borders,
Were yaqam [deeded/made sure] to Avraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Chet, before all who entered the gate of his city.
After this, Avraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is Chevron) in the land of Kena’an.
The field and the cave in it were deeded to Avraham by the sons of Chet as a possession for a burial place.
