Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 1 / 50
1In the Bereshit [Beginning], Elohim created the Shamayim [Heavens] and the Aretz [Earth]. 2The earth she became Tohu va-Vohu [formless and void], and darkness was over the face of the deep; and the Ruach Elohim [Spirit of God] was hovering over the waters. 3Elohim said: “Let there be Or [Light],” and there was Or. 4Elohim saw the Or, that it was good; and Elohim divided between the Or and the Choshech [Darkness]. 5Elohim called the Or “Yom [Day],” and the Choshech He called “Laylah [Night].” And there was evening and there was morning — Yom Echad [Day One]. 6Elohim said: “Let there be a Raqia [Firmament] in the midst of the waters, dividing water from water.” 7Elohim made the Raqia, dividing the waters under the Raqia from the waters above the Raqia. And it was so. 8Elohim called the Raqia “Shamayim [Heavens].” And there was evening and there was morning — Yom Sheni [Day Two]. 9Elohim said: “Let the waters under the Shamayim be gathered into one place, and let dry land appear.” And it was so. 10Elohim called the dry land “Aretz [Earth],” and the gatherings of the waters He called “Yamim [Seas].” Elohim saw that it was good. 11Elohim said: “Let the Aretz sprout vegetation: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees bearing fruit with seed in them, each according to its Min [kind].” And it was so. 12The Aretz brought forth vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them according to their kind. Elohim saw that it was good. 13And there was evening and there was morning — Yom Shlishi [Day Three]. 14Elohim said: “Let there be Me’orot [Lights] in the Raqia of the Shamayim to divide between Yom and Laylah, and let them be for otot [signs], for mo'adim [appointed times/seasons], for days and years. 15Let them be lights in the Raqia of the Shamayim to give light upon the Aretz.” And it was so. 16Elohim made the two great Me’orot: the greater Me’or to govern the Yom, and the lesser Me’or to govern the Laylah — and also the stars. 17Elohim set them in the Raqia of the Shamayim to give light upon the Aretz, 18To govern the Yom and the Laylah, and to divide between the Or and the Choshech. Elohim saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning — Yom Revi’i [Day Four]. 20Elohim said: “Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let flying creatures soar above the Aretz across the Raqia of the Shamayim.” And it was so. 21Elohim created the great sea creatures and every living thing that swarms in the waters according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. Elohim saw that it was good. 22Elohim blessed them, saying: “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the waters in the Yamim, and let the birds multiply on the Aretz.” 23And there was evening and there was morning — Yom Chamishi [Day Five]. 24Elohim said: “Let the Aretz bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creeping things, and wild beasts.” And it was so. 25Elohim made the wild beasts according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the Aretz according to its kind. Elohim saw that it was good. 26Elohim said: “Let Us make Adam [Man] in Our tzelem [image], according to Our demut [likeness]. Let them rule over the fish of the Yam [sea], the birds of the Shamayim [heaven], the livestock, all the Aretz [earth], and every creeping thing.” 27Elohim created Adam in His tzelem; in the tzelem Elohim [image of God] He created him; male and female He created them. 28Elohim blessed them, saying: “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the Aretz and subdue it; rule over the fish of the Yam, the birds of the Shamayim, and every living thing that creeps on the Aretz.” 29Elohim said: “Behold, I give you every seed-bearing plant on the Aretz, and every tree with seed-bearing fruit; they shall be food for you. 30And to every beast of the Aretz, every bird of the Shamayim, and everything that creeps on the Aretz that has the Nephesh Chayah [living soul/breath of life], I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31Elohim saw all that He had made, and behold, it was tov me’od [very good]. And there was evening and there was morning — Yom Shishi [Day Six].
